Prom Dress | Choosing a Dress According to Your Skin Tone

Many people arbitrarily pick the colors of their formal dresses without really knowing what will look best on them. For the most part, the color that looks best on a woman is related to her skin tone. Everyone’s skin tone is slightly different, but can generally be grouped into four main categories.

Summer: People with summer complexions have pink and pale skin. Most people with summer coloring have natural blonde hair or light brown hair with pale eyes. They have a low level of contrast between their hair, eye color, and skin tone. Soft neutrals and pastels are usually a good choice for people with summer coloring. Powder blue, light pink and mauve are good color choices. Intense vivid hues and earth tones tend to look very harsh with summer skin tones. Black and orange are two colors that should definitely be avoided.

Spring: People with spring complexions usually have a creamy white or golden peach skin tone. They tend to have light hair, rosy cheeks, and sometimes freckles. In addition, they usually have blue or green eyes. Soft colors such as peach, yellow or light brown usually suit those with a spring complexion. Dark colors should be avoided as well as white clothing.

Autumn: Autumn complexions have golden undertones. Brunettes with golden brown eyes and redheads often fit into this complexion category. When shopping for clothes to flatter and highlight your autumn complexion, always look for shades with a warm undertone. Those with autumn complexions should choose clothes in colors that have golden undertones such as orange, beige, gold and brown. They should avoid blue tones such as navy.

Winter: Winter complexions are similar to summer complexions in that their skin has blue or pink undertones. Skin color can be anything from pale to olive to dark. Many people of African or Asian descent fit into this category. People with a winter complexion have brown hair and dark colored eyes. Clear, bold colors look great on someone with a winter complexion. Black, white, and bright pink look great on a winter. Avoid colors with strong golden undertones such as orange, peach, gold, yellow and orange. Winter is one of the most versatile skin tones and the winter skin tone looks flattering with many different colors.

It is important to note that these are just guidelines. Some people transcend different complexions. For example, some people have characteristics of both winter and summer, while others have characteristics of both spring and fall. However, following these guidelines will often help to create a flattering look for anyone. If you are looking to buy bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses or homecoming dresses, you definitely want to pay attention to these guidelines and dress accordingly!
