Sweet sixteen as something of an American tradition as being the age at which a girl begins to lose some of her little girlishness and begins to blossom into a woman. Many parents still make a big deal out of a girl turning sixteen. They throw an elaborate birthday party and treat it as a special event. This provides a young girl another opportunity to shop for a cute dress. Unlike prom dresses, girls tend to stick with more affordable sweet sixteen dresses rather than going all out with fancy formalwear and lots of jewelry.
